Hardware looks lonely from the outside. It is not. SF's hardware scene is dense, welcoming, and weirdly good at answering emails from strangers.
Circuit Launch (Oakland): the closest thing the scene has to a clubhouse. Events, demos, and open houses; most of the Bay Area robotics community passes through.
Noisebridge (Mission): weekly circuit hacking and open nights. The fastest way to meet people who solder for fun.
Hardware meetups: hardware and robotics meetup groups run regularly in SF and the East Bay; search Meetup and Luma for current series, since schedules shift.
University programs: Berkeley and Stanford host public talks, demo days, and robotics showcases that welcome industry people.
Hackaday and its events, the EEVblog forums, and category Discords are where the practical knowledge lives. Locally, many teams coordinate through alumni channels from YC and from the spaces above.
Bring a prototype. The social currency of this community is a thing you made that half works; nobody will remember your pitch, everyone will remember the robot that fell off the table.
