Certification is where hardware schedules go to die. The Bay Area is unusually good for this: some of the country's largest compliance labs are a short drive away, and pre-compliance testing here can save you a full redesign cycle.
Bay Area Compliance Laboratories (BACL), Sunnyvale: A major independent lab for FCC, CE, and wireless testing. Common first stop for SF startups.
National labs with local offices: Intertek, TUV, UL Solutions, and Element all operate in the Bay Area and can bundle safety (UL/IEC), EMC, and radio certification into one program.
Specialty wireless labs: if your product is radio-heavy (cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, UWB), ask labs about their CTIA and carrier-certification experience up front, not after the first failure.
Run pre-compliance EMC scans early, on your first real board spin. Radiated emissions failures almost always trace back to board layout, and layout is cheapest to change before the enclosure is tooled. Safety testing (UL 62368 for most electronics) can run in parallel once the design is stable. Budget one full test cycle as a loss: plan for two.
Ask the lab for a test plan review before you book time; good labs will flag missing requirements (battery transport testing, UN 38.3, is the classic one) before they cost you a slot. And book early: lab queues in the Bay Area run weeks long at the end of the year when everyone is pushing for a holiday ship date.
